Saint Paul Balcony Master Plan Document

Welcome to the River Balcony – one of the most exciting ideas to come out of Saint Paul’s vision for reconnecting to the Mississippi River in the 21st century, the Great River Passage Master Plan.

One of Saint Paul’s greatest assets is the Mississippi River, and the River Balcony will play an important role in creating vibrant places that connect the downtown community to this wonderful natural landmark. The Great River Passage encompasses 26 miles of Mississippi riverfront within the city’s boundaries and, along with Minneapolis, comprises the most urban section of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. It is a precious environmental, recreational, cultural, historic and economic resource for Saint Paul and the region, and it is that legacy we celebrate with the River Balcony.

The 1.5-mile elevated pedestrian pathway on the downtown river bluff will provide new visual and physical connections between downtown and the Mississippi River, creating vibrant outdoor spaces that will extend from the Science Museum of Minnesota to Union Depot. Not only will it provide a jaw dropping panoramic view of the great river valley, but it will also allow people to access the river’s edge as they engage in some of their favorite activities.

Nordic Ski Technique Display Tool

This idea has been ruminating in my head since I published my book  Teaching Cross-Country Skiing: a life-size cardboard/foamcore/other stiff material hinged at ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows and possibly, head. This would allow a coach the opportunity to describe correct, or incorrect technique, moving limbs as necessary. So, I took the opportunity to illustrate this quickly in a Nordic team booth/exhibit of my imagination. Now, I just might have to fabricate one of these….before it snows again!

Every once is a blue moon you get to design a magazine –the whole shebang. Actually, even less than that does one get to design, write, edit, photograph and color in it, if there’s a page for coloring. But, even less often than all that, is the opportunity to redesign it and do all those other fun things. But I did!

After 100 years, Minnehaha Academy decided to change the name of their alumni magazine and redesign it – well, they asked me to redesign it. I did. See what you think.
